Young English Players - What's changed?
Over the last 18 months, England has had a real emergence of talented players come through, Rice, Sancho, Odoi, Foden, Maddison, Harvey Barnes, there's also quite a few more and was wondering what's changed?

Wasn't so long ago "pundits" were worrying where our talent was going to come from, then all of a sudden the Youth teams have started producing and winning titles.

So, what's it all about?

3G and 4g pitches has helped my way, there is some sort of league football every day of the week.

Sunday league has suffered but that’s mainly because they are going from these 4G pitches to a mud bath.

ED - There's definitely been a culture change,

Although, I played with Charlie Daniels who's now at Bournemouth for years at Sunday League Level, he was the smallest player on the pitch and usually never started games but the only one out of a team who were all at Norwich, Arsenal, Spurs etc to have made it.

We seem to be missing a good enough keeper though, although they're always that bit older than the rest of the team.

That's the key difference. You're spot on, football back when was all about a big fast kid up front, and it's only over the last decade that has really changed, but it's been so ingrained in our culture. Now, the emphasis is on actually playing football.

Bolty, all the players you mention are all off a similar stature, apart from Declan, who is a defensive player unlike the others. Those kids would have been overlooked in the main as not being big enough. The odd few used to break through, but mainly they were bombed out.

HT78 yes that was introduced in 2011 or 2010 I think from memory as my eldest was one of the first to play 9v9 when we was an U11.

When was the last time we had such depth of talent coming through?

The change was years back, when Sir Trevor Brooking told the dinosaurs in the FA what they should be doing and how. If this generaton win the world cup, "it's happened again, West Ham United, it's happened again."

In a nutshell.

Agree with sgriffin, it's just a cycle. In the late 90's France had it then 10 years later Spain, and recently Belgium, so maybe it's our turn.

Must say, I'm looking forward to the Euro's next summer.Waistcoat has a lot of options now.

Just the passing of time and the coincidence of players coming through at same period.

In four years we will be bare bones again.

I run my boy's U7s team and we play 5v5 and will do again next season. We'll then go to 7v7 for two years, followed by two years of 9v9, and eventually on to 11v11 on full size pitches and goals by which time the whole team will be comfortable on the ball and will have it within their DNA to keep the ball and pass and move etc.

At the age of 8, I was playing on full size pitches with full size goals. We had a fast kid upfront and we simply lumped the ball into the acres of space between the defenders and GK for him to run on to.

The difference is night and day. What I don't know is how long this has been going on but may well be a factor in why the kids coming through now seem to be technically better.

after 2010 we basically did what the germans did after 2002. that took 12 years to properly bear fruit and if anything we're ahead of that timeline.

Thank God we Allardyce got sacked. Can just imagine his England team if he was still there. Barry and Milner in midfield. Defoe impact sub.

Re: Young English Players - What's changed?
Simple thing - MONEY, there has been massive investment in youth training at both England and also academy level by a number of top clubs. They pretty much restructured elite youth football after reviewing all the best elements which were working for countries like Germany, France and Spain. England now boasts several of the top youth academy facilities in the world.

I think Southgate has proven he'll pick players on form, Boots.

He isn't anything like the previous managers we've had who always picked the same shitcunts who failed.

Re: Young English Players - What's changed?
Dan Ashworth was always saying that we had the talent coming through, nobody listened, now he is being proved right

However.....Southgate will stick with the Dier's and Henderson's of this world

Re: Young English Players - What's changed?
Didn't say in any way that he hadn't brought any young British players through. He was excellent for that.

Mourinho and a lot of other managers at top clubs in England (anyone at Chelsea) have/had been fucking piss poor at it for years. Wenger was interested, but more interested in bringing young French or African players through.

Klopp (Rodgers before him) Pochettino and Guardiola are bringing some young players through, which is good to see.

Re: Young English Players - What's changed?
There is definitely more of an emphasis on being good on the ball.
Dare I say having lots of talented foreign players at clubs has helped provide examples to young players.

The mentality does seem more about getting the ball down and playing rather than lots of ALLARDYCE BALL.
